FAQ

Directions: There are numerous access points to the refuge.  To start from the refuge headquarters, travel 6 miles past Clearwater Junction east on Highway 200.  Look for Woodworth Road to the left, which is also signed for the refuge and Upsata Lake.  Follow that road about 1 1/3 miles to the refuge headquarters, visible off to the left. Low-clearance vehicles are not recommended if you opt to drive into the refuge.

Type of ride: Dirt road and some single-track, depending on route. A topographic profile of the East-West Road starting from the east side is shown below.

Distance of ride: Varies

Description: The Blackfoot-Clearwater Wildlife Management Area   is a refuge for wintering elk and deer.  It is also home to black bears, grizzly bears and waterfowl. If you start from the east side, follow the first major road junction to the left (or uphill). The character of the range changes from lush and marshy on the east side to open grasslands on the west side. As you ride along, side roads offer numerous options for exploration throughout the area. 

The refuge is closed seasonally from November 15-May 14. Additional information can be found the Public Lands Information Center. Use the map to explore this area.
